Sydney artist wins Whiteley scholarship

» SYDNEY artist Belem Lett, 23, has won the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship for his work, refraction 2.0.

Ninety-nine entries were received from young artists around Australia, nine of which are included in the finalists' exhibition online.

The winning entry and three other works will be on show at the Brett Whiteley Studio, which is managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, until November 28.

Now in its 12th year, the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship is open to Australian artists aged between 20 and 30 years. The winner is awarded $25,000 and a three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, which is administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

    » AUSSIE screenwriter Stuart Beattie, probably better known for his screenplay of three Pirates of the Caribbean films (The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, At World's End), has turned his hand to film direction.

    His cinematic debut, Tomorrow, When the War Began, translates into film the novel of the same name by noted Australian children's author John Marsden.

    It is the story of eight high school friends in a remote country town whose lives are abruptly changed with the onslaught of an unforeseen war. They are cut off from family and friends and now must learn to escape, survive and fight back.
